Welcome to Mdmb
Marlborough Downs Mountain Boarding Centre opened for one month in August 2003 as a trial project. Under the supervision of two world champions from America two tracks were developed on the south facing chalk downs between Pewsey and Devizes, in Wiltshire. One is encouraging for beginners and one is more exciting, demanding and challenging for the more advanced rider. The centre has qualified male and female instructors offering instruction and support, whilst ensuring equipment is safe and comfortable to wear. A range of mountain boards, protection pads and helmets can be hired for both adults and children and we can cater for special occasions such as birthday parties. We also offer an all year around service, away from the centre. This involves providing lessons to organisations, societies and schools on their own grounds or site.
How does it work?
This is a snowboard / skateboard with 4x4 wheels attached. They are also called dirt boards and all terrain skateboards. They have a good set of bearings in them, some suspension and a couple of straps. On Mdmb's Mountain boards you are not strapped in so you can release you feet, but there are other mountain boarding centres where you're feet are strapped in, in a similar fashion to a snowboard. Then you find a boarding hill or use specialist centres and make your way down, like all sports there are left footed / handed people, these generally ride 'goofy' as opposed to the right footed / handed people who ride 'regular' or left foot forward. At this point you are probably going down hill quite quickly with no idea how to turn or stop, that's not a problem as most mountain boarding places such mdmb' sites have a gentle run off at the end of the run that allows you to slow down with out doing anything too drastic. Turning is pretty simple to, hold both arms out, a bit like a scarecrow and point in the direction you want to go and you should head in that direction, if you turn a bit sharper you will be facing the mountain and should stop. Now don't get me wrong, it's a lot more complicated than this, but it is all in your weight and balance and pointing in the desired direction shifts you weight perfectly, it just takes a little confidence. So you have made it down the hill and all you need to do is get back up, some downhill mountain boarding locations have drag lifts, others sites provide lifts on tractors, at mdmb we provide a lift on a quad bike. In the back country or if you are in to exploring, then a good long hike up a mountain will provide you with the untouched scenery, incredible downhill runs and some of the best sites. Wiltshire has some stunning locations, you can find out more about these on our website, but be sure to seek permission before you upset someone.

The Centre is open from 29th of April until the
31st of August, but we can provide lessons away from the centre throughout
the year. We currently do a lot of mountain boarding lessons for schools
in Wiltshire through out the year and are looking to develop this with
other organisations and societies.
